Vittoria Rubino Pro 3 :(

Well, having used the Vittoria Randonneurs for a few thousand kilometres in all sorts of conditions, I had quite high expectations for the Rubino Pros but I have to say that they have definitely failed to impress, and in fact I would say that they have definitely under whelmed. Within 1000 kilometres, I have now had two tyres fail on me, not normal puncture situations but a rip in the tyre causing a big tear in the tube. I don’t know how tyres are constructed especially not folding bead tyres, but it just looks like the seam has come apart or something. I discovered the latest tear today when I went to pump up the tyres and couldn’t believe it, I’d only ridden the bike once in the past few weeks and only for about ten kilometres. So I put a new tube in and tested pumping it up only to see a bulge in one section of the tyre, exactly the same thing that happened last time. So as good as the tyres look, it seems the durability of the tyres is terrible which is not a good thing because I already invested in several other sets, red and white ones for both my bikes :( . Let’s just hope that the previous bunch I got were from a bad batch or something and the latest ones I bought are okay, but certainly my expectations have been lowered significantly.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Watched this a few weeks ago now and finally now have gotten around to posting the review, been kinda hectic around here the past couple of weeks. No, I haven’t read the book, nor have I seen the Swedish version, so watching the film was basically all I had to go on (apart from knowing that the book was some sort of thriller which is why I stayed away from reading it). I’m going to step away from writing about the plot/story so much as I’ve been told that’s not what a review should be about, so instead I’ll comment on some aspects of the film I found interesting.

The start of the film was a bit of a blur, I couldn’t understand most of what was being said, so I wasn’t sure if I was watching the English version or not, Daniel Craig just seemed to be mumbling a lot in the first ten minutes or so, I honestly could not make out anything he was saying. And some more on the speech of the characters, I have often wondered this about movies that are set in foreign countries but where English is the language of the actual film, why do they speak with accents? In reality, the characters wouldn’t be speaking English, Daniel Craig wasn’t speaking with an accent, so why was Rooney Mara? I can understand it if it’s a film based in a foreign country and the language of the film is English, if someone speaks with an accent to signify that that character is from a different country or something, but in this film everyone is meant to be Swedish. So if everyone is Swedish, but everyone is speaking English, why bother having some with English accents, and some with Swedish accents? I don’t have the answers for those question, so I’ll move on.

There was quite a bit of sex in the film (I already said I haven’t read the book, and apparently there’s even more in the book, so I guess the film was toned down even), I just wonder if there was actually any point to it all, the fat government official guy, what was the point of that? Was that a bit of character build up or was that just the author’s fantasy? I don’t know, but it didn’t seem relevant to me, pretty much that whole side of the story didn’t seem particularly relevant (yeah, we know she’s been mistreated and hard done by for years, that’s why she is the way she is). Any way, also I’d like to make the point that it was a shame that the character Rooney Mara was playing looked the way she did, she looks a lot better in normal make up and dress, that’s all I’m saying :D .

To be honest, I think I had one other thing to comment on about the film, but it was a while ago and now I’ve forgotten, it might have had to do with the lovey dubby ending, but I can’t remember and that makes this review quite pathetic, but I haven’t posted anything here for a while so I thought I better post something before this blog is forgotten forever.

Final thoughts on my first European experience

So I got back on Monday after a flight delay that left us in Hong Kong and Shanghai for a forgettable day. Apparently Iceland received record snowfalls this Winter, so we didn’t get to see the best of an Icelandic Winter, oh well I was expecting snow any way, and we did get a couple of clear days to see around Reykjavik at least. I wouldn’t exactly call Reykjavik a city, it’s more like a town considering that you can walk from the suburbs to downtown in 25 minutes, but it has all the amenities, didn’t see the night life at all, but that’s not a big deal considering I’m currently sober :D . What I found a little amazing was that even in Patreksfjordur, population about 1000, they have proper 3g coverage and broadband internet, it’s about as remote as you can get in Europe I would think, and yet they pretty much have all the amenities. I did have a pretty scary ferry ride from the Westfjords to Snaefell before driving along some dark and dusty roads back to Reykjavik. I am thinking that I’ll go back in the future, probably in late Spring/early Summer time, although I would like to go again perhaps in the late Autumn/early Winter to give myself another chance to see the northern lights, in a better location with a clearer sky, that would still be ideal.

As for Paris, in the little time I spent there and without actually getting around the downtown area too much and especially not seeing the night life, I could tell that it was a place that I would definitely really like. It’s such a busy place and the people (especially the girls) are very good looking :D , they must be so vain, or just really lucky. There’s no shortage of anything it seems, although the Vietnamese food is certainly not as good as Melbourne from what I tried. The metro system is great, just like the one in Mexico City, and they have use-once tickets as well as the re-usable card, they know what they’re doing. Winter there was not as cold as I expected, there were a couple of cold days right around 1-2 degrees, but then the two days before we left were about 10 degrees and positively balmy! Any way, I bet it’s an especially magnificent city in the warmer weather.

And now the rant, bloody Air France, and bloody QANTAS, I can tell you, I will not be flying Air France again if I can help it, and I won’t be flying QANTAS unless they have super special deals that are so cheap as to be insane not to buy, also I have frequent flyer points that I will need to use rather than waste. Air France got all the passengers on to the plane on time, and then sat there waiting (for half an hour with no information), then drove out to the runway and waited again for half an hour before finally notifying passengers of a maintenance check that needed to be done, then finally after two hours we finally took off. Initially they were telling us on the plane that we would arrive only thirty minutes later than the initial arrival time, so passengers with connecting flights need not worry. After a bit of sleep, and checking the flight route and destination details, it became apparent that we were not going to arrive in time for our flight, and in fact we were arrived exactly two hours late, ten minutes after our particular connecting flight was due to leave, so they made up no time at all. On the plane, the cabin crew told us to go talk to the ground staff for further information, so a bunch of Aussies with connecting flights to Melbourne and Sydney were possibly expecting that we’d walk through and be lead to our boarding gates by someone only to find that our QANTAS flights had already left. So Air France, who were operating a flight for QANTAS from Paris to Hong Kong did not do anything to help those passengers that had connecting flights with QANTAS to get on their flights on time. Instead they provided us with $90HKD worth of food vouchers for the airport and half a night’s stay in the airport hotel. Air France obviously working with their partner airlines only, provided us with airfares to get back to Melbourne, but not until over 24 hours after we were meant to.

So we were stuck boarding a second rate plane with China Eastern Airlines to Shanghai bright and early in the morning and spending the whole day there until a flight in the evening back to Melbourne. OK, China Eastern Airlines didn’t actually seem so bad up until then, apart from the service being a little abrupt. They were running on time and everything, and with a whole day in town we decided to head out to see what Shanghai was about, I didn’t see anything that I would say will warrant a return visit. Any way, our flight was meant to leave Shanghai at 8.15pm, but it was eventually delayed by over and hour and we eventually took off, they also never gave us any indication of how long it would take or what time we would arrive in Melbourne. So QANTAS having bailed on us,is now pretty much on my boycott list, and Air France, I should have known, I guess we’re fortunate to be back in Melbourne in one piece.

But the rant is not over! For some reason, the airport in France (Terminal 2 at least) seem to think that it’s a good idea to only have one person working the departure desks (and arrival desks when we arrived) which makes for a lot of waiting before you can enter or leave the country by plane, get to the airport early! Maybe it has to do with the financial crisis and they are cutting costs. Now rant over, and we can look at some pretty pictures! I will hopefully start posting pictures on flickr this weekend.

dtra: The Ever Living

So, another year over, another one just begun, I spent the past four days up in the Westfjords, which were very scenic although I didn’t get to see much of them because of the weather, also I was kind of working. So I was stuck inside most of the time, and didn’t get to go up the mountain roads and get some good views during the day, another time perhaps, the views I’m sure are spectacular. I was staying in Patreksfjordur with a lovely family working on a book about French sailors in Iceland to be published. Anyway, we’ve got three more days here in Reykjavik before heading back to Paris for a day, and then back home, the weather hasn’t been the greatest recently, but it’s Winter so there’s not much you can do. I’m not going to babble on here, just post some pictures of the craziness of Iceland.

A White Xmas Indeed

Merry Xmas to everyone out there, hopefully you’ve had or are having a very peaceful time. I’ve had xmas’ away from home before, but this is the first one ever in the northern hemisphere, and I’m pretty far north. It really is Winter here, and a white Xmas as well, a little too white for my liking, it is freezing. It’s snowing, and windy, and very dark as I type this. The snow is deep and it is very cold, but it’s soft at least. The weather is a bit unpredictable and so makes it quite difficult to go out and take some photos after dark, I can’t be sure that it won’t be violently cold and windy. I hope it’s not like that when I go up to the western fjords just after the new year, if it’s just cold that’s one thing, but if it’s snowing and windy that makes it very difficult to get outside to take some photos. Perhaps I may have to settle for taking photos from inside behind windows, that would be a little disappointing, let’s cross that bridge when it comes.

I tried some putrid shark a couple days ago, this is not a delicacy here, it’s a traditional meal from western Iceland that has made its way around the rest of the country. Basically it is smelly, yucky, and burns your mouth, but you may as well try it if you’re here, really, really, awful, the worst thing I have ever eaten in my adult life (and as far as I can remember).

Anyway, here are some fresh pictures for your perusal in snowy Icy Land.

Damn DA21! Why? Why?

It seems my beloved DA21 has failed me once again, after getting it repaired to fix an issue with focusing close to and at infinity, only a couple hundred snaps later and it seems the issue has reared it’s ugly head again. This time unfortunately, I don’t have the recourse to take it to the shop for repair, as I am away in a faraway land and would not have time to get it done during this holiday period. I also have not forgotten that the lens repair is still under warranty so I will be taking it straight back to the shop to get it sorted out (hopefully properly this time). This is a terrible stroke of luck as it is my main landscape lens and while travelling to faraway places, landscape photography is what I really look forward to. Here in Icy Land, I’m hoping for some northern lights action and any other wild Winter volcanic landscapes that exist on this crazy island. That means that my widest lens is the FA43, the 43 denoting 43mm, which means that the lens is not that wide at all, it is a beautiful lens, but really is only useful for massive landscapes and massive panoramas, it doesn’t give me the width to take in a regular landscape or even a bit of architecture. I guess I’m just going to have to be super-creative (which is a struggle for me) and hope for the best, maybe this is a good thing, maybe I will be able to find my inner-Picasso and snap some really creative/artsy shots. Oh poor DA21, my most used travel lens, needs to be fixed properly. It’s so freaking cold here, it’s going to take all of my will power just to get out and take photos, especially now that my wide lens is done and dusted anyway.

Off to the Arctic Frost

Iceland is in the Arctic right? Well, I’m off to Paris first anyway for my first taste of Europe and a properly cold Winter, New Zealand was cold but it was only really cold on top of the mountains. Well, I’m now here in Gay Paris, and it’s anywhere between 1 and 5 degrees celsius, Iceland will be around 0 degrees with snow as far as I can see, beanie time! Arrived a couple days ago and have seen the Eiffel Tower (didn’t get to the top because it was overloaded apparently) then walked down the Champs-Elysees and saw the Arc de Triomphe (I didn’t have a tripod with me so I couldn’t get a decent shot of it (why didn’t I bring The Pod?!?!), anyway, it’s all very cool here, the people are so European! It’s very busy and a bit hectic, I guess that’s what makes this a big city. Anyway, we’ve only got a few days here, leaving for IcyLand on Thursday (Paris time) and will spend three weeks up there visiting baby niece and wandering around trying to capture the northern lights.

Someone posted a picture of mine!

I just got another request for use of one of my pictures from flickr which reminded me that I had a previous request a few months ago, so I had a bit of a google to see what ever happened with that. I did manage to find the site and picture with credit to me as requested, I don’t know if I got any extra hits but it’s cool to have the old dtra name out there. Anyway, it is just this picture of a rhesus monkey and its baby that I took in KL at the Batu Caves, which can also be found at flickr rhesus monkey hugs, now if only I can work out how to start charging these people for using my picture(s) :D . Anyway, this other request is from Friends of the Earth, some environmental charity and they want to use my most viewed flickr picture, the HDR shot of the clouds at Gunting Lagadan near the peak of Mount Kinabalu. I’ll post again when I see this one posted (if I can remember).

Synology DS1511+

I got this box about a month ago now and have been testing it out for a while now, I haven’t gone out of my way to test the read/write speeds because it’s not a big deal as long as playback is fast enough. I’m not that nerdy to set up my own NAS using a cheap motherboard and case and configure the crap out of some open source project, that is too much effort for me, I just wanted something that I could plug in, plug hard drives in, and put it to work. Originally I was going to get a drobo, but after a bit more research I found this to have more positive feedback.

Synology DS1511+

Synology DS1511+ with extra storage options

Quieter and faster, but more expensive (about $100), it just seemed like the better option, with pretty much all the same features (plus a costly option to add up to ten more hard drives). Setup was pretty easy, plug it in, connect to the network (I used both cables for redundancy), plug the hard drives in, turn it on, and launch the software from the CD on your computer. Actually, I think the software was a little difficult to find at first, probably because I didn’t read the manual (the problem for me was that the setup files were .pat files and on my macbook for whatever reason .pat files are associated with the Gimp), so it was a little confusing but once I worked that out, it was a breeze. I loaded it up with three 2TB hard drives using the Hybrid RAID (the Synology proprietary setup) which allows me to mix different size hard drives in the RAID for ease of use, meaning I can add 3 or 4TB (whenever they become available) to the system and the system will do all the hard work of assigning the disk space for me. This gives me about 3.6TB of usable hard drive space as one hard drive is used as a backup, at the moment I’ve only used up about 500GB so the need for more hard drives is still a long way off.

So having copied all of my videos, music, photos, and also set up my Time Machine to backup to the NAS, everything is running pretty smoothly I must say. I never managed to work out how to migrate my existing Time Machine backups (from my MyBook external hard drive) to the new location, I didn’t want to try doing the block copy and erasing existing data from the NAS as I’m not sure if that meant changing the file system so I just started a new Time Machine backup and have kept the MyBook as is for now. I did the initial backup over the LAN and now just have incremental backups working wirelessly, working like a charm. I set up the media server using the DSM web application which works perfectly with my WDTV Live thank you very much. I’ve not used that many features of the NAS, and I’m not really sure that I will need to but so far what I have used, Time Machine, Media Server, and the NAS in general, have been excellent, more than I expected (the software runs very smoothly).

New Studio/Study

No, I have not renovated my flat, I’ve just repainted the study walls and given it a bit of pizazz. I was originally thinking that the colours would be somewhat grey with a slight blue tint. The end result is a much bluer colour than I originally imagined, we were using the colour of a wall from a jpeg being viewed on an iphone, so I think that’s where we went wrong there. But in the end I’m very happy with how the colours have turned out. The first picture shows the colours (low sheen all using Dulux paint) we used (feature wall is Happy Days, and the other three walls are Bay’s Water), the patchiness is because the paint is still drying. The second picture is the bucket that I used for cleaning the brushes after the brushes had been cleaned, quite blue right (I might make my own film with some CG backgrounds and characters).

Wall Colours

Water is blue

Water is blue

The finished result with the fluorescent lighting, it’s a bit warm and not that great in the shot, the walls look a lot better in natural lighting (especially the one with the black bike), I will update this post (or add a new one more likely) with a picture taken in natural light when I get a picture to put on the feature wall (probably the cow). The doors, windows, and skirting we painted with high gloss white paint and the contrast works really well. I’m not going to go into all the detail of what we did because we just followed guides from the internets.

The feature-less wall

The feature-less wall

In terms of what we learnt and will do better next time (yeah, there will probably be a next time :D ), they are:

  • Use a sample colour first! (although we didn’t with the feature wall and might not have finished the job if we didn’t have 4L of the darker blue already), it only costs about $10 bux for 250ml of the sample and you can get a good idea whether you like it or not.
  • Tear the painters tape off straight away, we didn’t and it did end up tearing some paint off (although we did touch it up later to good effect).
  • Vacuum after sanding, just means there will not be dust all over the skirting when it comes time to paint those parts.
  • An extension for the roller(s) is definitely worth it, saves having to use a ladder.
  • Different sized brushes are very useful.
  • Let the paint set for at least a few days more than what it says on the can before putting stuff in contact with it.
  • Gloves are a good idea.
  • Take before shots so that you can compare the job properly afterwards!
The plain wall

The plain wall

Next in line, the living room and my bedroom, I’m not sure when we’ll do them, but we’ve still got plenty of paint so we’ll see, I’m not sure how much time I have before the end of the year to do it, so it may have to wait until sometime in the new year before I can do the next room. I’m still tossing up whether to do the living room with a feature wall or all four the same colour.
